Supersalon, the new space for cutting specialist Jess Wang, is located at Nightingale Wurru Wurru Biik. The design goal was to create a salon that is immediately welcoming and calm, mirroring the tranquil feeling Jess brings to her work. Situated adjacent to the Upfield bike path, the salon is wrapped in windows that allow ample sunlight into the space from a covered walkway.
The small space uses a mix of natural materials and vibrant immersive colour to delineate different areas. Visitors are met at the entry by smooth blue curves and shelves displaying a selection of perfectly pastel retail products. The zone is saturated in a light blue colour, that reappears subtly throughout the rest of the salon, including a tiled blue ledge along the windows and cabinets stained a deep blue by Jess herself.
The shampoo area provides a unique, serene experience. It is enveloped by a curtain of fabric repurposed from the former Suku Dream Baby space on Gertrude Street. The fabric is gradient orange on the outside and an all-encompassing blue on the inside, creating an ocean of calm for clients. This swathe of colour transitions into the main salon area, which is distinguished by individual stations, each framed by floating timber posts that are elevated off the ground by slim supports. This approach allows the cutting stations to feel lightweight and ensure this small space still feels open and inviting.
When looking for a core colour for this project we were searching for something that felt neutral and unisex to compliment the natural materials used throughout the rest of the space. The Sky Pilot blue when used on the walls created a serene atmosphere, evocative of gazing up at a blue cloudless sky. The perfect mood for clients anticipating a relaxing hair appointment.
